5-Devise to launch at Sunderland Empire this Summer

The Sunderland Empire have announces that 5-Devise will launch this summer offering young people from across the region the opportunity to take part in an exciting five day theatre project from Monday 8th – Friday 12th August 2016.

Young people will spend five days at Sunderland Empire, learning and developing creativity and performance skills, whilst devising an original piece of theatre with Sunderland Empire’s in-house creative learning professionals.

Through working closely with the local community and theatre production companies Sunderland Empire’s in-house creative learning practitioners have established a strong reputation for innovative theatre projects. Similar successful participatory learning provision has included the development of a number of weekly classes on-site at Sunderland Empire in youth theatre, a community choir and movement group for retired people.

Hollie Coxon, Creative Learning Manager, Sunderland Empire explained “We believe that theatre should be as accessible as possible to everybody and understand the value of engaging with theatre. 5-Devise is a new summer programme for young people which offers an in-depth insight into how theatre is devised, and created. The programme focuses on the creative process, and fostering an enjoyable and inspiring experience for young people at Sunderland Empire.”

Following five intensive days at Sunderland Empire, the week will culminate in a sharing of work for friends and family, as well as the opportunity to discuss further theatre engagement opportunities to support young people’s growth in performing arts.
