An
Exciting time for Tyne Theatre & Opera House: Restoration, Fundraising
& a TV Appearance!
It’s been just over a year since Tyne Theatre & Opera House was given a new lease of life when a
new company, Tyne Theatre & Opera
House Ltd was set up to operate and manage the building, and since then
things have gone from strength to strength.
Alongside the Preservation
Trust who own the building, Tyne
Theatre & Opera House Ltd’s aim is to restore and protect the
magnificent Grade 1 listed Victorian theatre so that future generations can
continue to benefit from the remarkable building.
One year on, the future is looking incredibly bright for the
theatre. 2016 is full of stellar shows, from huge comedy names such as Sarah Millican, Dylan Moran and Katherine
Ryan to visits from touring shows such as the award-winning Avenue Q and Footloose: The Musical (with more shows still being booked!)
Not only do these great shows continue to draw in impressive
audience figures, but we are thrilled to say that restoration of the theatre is
slowly but steadily underway with various repairs and improvements.
Redecoration of the theatre’s Bistro Bar is now complete thanks to hours of
work from our dedicated volunteers, and many seats in the auditorium have been
completely reupholstered with many more still to be replaced.
There is still much to be done, and this would not be possible
without the hard work of our volunteers and generosity of the public. As a
not-for-profit organization that receives no outside funding, Tyne Theatre
& Opera House relies upon donations and fundraisers to ensure its
continuing existence.
After the huge success of last year’s The Pirates of Penzance, this year’s fundraising production is Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet
Street which takes place from Wednesday 2nd to Saturday 5th
March.
This production is presented by Friends of Tyne Theatre & Opera House, all of whom are
volunteers, and is directed by professional actress Lynne Wilmot whose credits include the Les Miserables movie and
National UK tour, London Road, Purely Belter, and the upcoming films
from Disney and Universal respectively, Beauty
and the Beast and The Huntsman
Winter’s War. Performed with a large live orchestra, Sweeney Todd looks set to be another brilliant success.
Last but certainly not least, Tyne Theatre & Opera House is
thrilled to be appearing on BBC1’s Inside Out on Monday
1st February at 7.30pm: a
fantastic way to round-up a successful first year!
Theatre Director Joanne Johnson says: “I’m thrilled to be a part of the Tyne Theatre & Opera House team
during this exciting time. As we begin to start restoration work on the
beautiful building and our theatre programme continues to expand with a whole
host of incredible shows, it’s great to see how many people are enthusiastic
about our beautiful Victorian theatre.”
