Mixtape move to Live Theatre

Friday 5 September, 7.30pm
Mixtape: Boy Band Vs Girl Bands
Newcastle Live Theatre’s Studio Theatre
Friday 7 November, 7.30pm
Mixtape: North East
Newcastle Live Theatre’s Studio Theatre

Fresh from their festival tour to the Secret Garden Party, Hijack and Larmer Tree Festival and after a succession of sell-out shows at Alphabetti Spaghetti Theatre, Mixtape are back presenting bite-sized theatre inspired by music at Newcastle’s premiere new writing venue Live Theatre.

On Friday 5 September the Mixtapers will take on Boy Bands Versus Girl Bands. Audiences will be invited to don their Union Jack dresses and 90s puffa jackets and get their pop star attitude on for a high-octane ride down Smash Hits memory lane. See the Spice Girls battle it out against All Saints and Take That challenge Five in this edition of Mixtape.

The Mixtapers will take songs by Boy Bands and Girl Bands and, using only the song’s lyrics, create short bite-sized comedy sketches that can be no longer than the tracks that inspired them.  The Mixtapers can only use the lyrics from the songs to create the play’s scripts. The lyrics can be reordered in any way that the Mixtapers choose but know additional words can be used. Part theatre show and part pop quiz, audiences have the chance of winning the highly coveted Golden Mixtape if they manage to correctly guess the songs and bands that inspired each short sketch.
Audiences play along in teams for the chance of winning the highly coveted Golden Mixtape. To win, teams must correctly guess the songs and bands that inspired each short micro-play. The team with the most correct answers will walk away with the highly coveted Golden Mixtape.

The Boy Band Versus Girl Band performers include
Newcastle based actors James Barton, Samantha Bell, Steven Blackshaw, Amy Foley, Chris Foley and Zoe Hakin.

On Friday 7 November celebrate everything North East in this extra special edition of Mixtape: Now that’s what I call the North East!
This November the Mixtapers will take songs by North East bands and artists. Audiences will be tested to see if they know their Sting from their Dire Straits and their Lake Poets for their Tea Pad Orchestras.
Mixtape is the perfect night out for theatre, music and pub quiz lovers. Conceived by theatre director Melanie Rashbrooke, Mixtape is a night of theatrical madness written by some of the most exciting writers in the region.

Reviews of past gigs

★★★★★
‘Innovative, imaginative, inventive, entertaining, that‘s an evening at a Mixtape event…The stage sparkled with creative talent and abounded with endless energy and dynamic delivery; most pieces were like a shot in the arm with an occasional calming, sedate one, so delivering a balanced evening’s entertainment. Laughter came thick and fast from the full, appreciative audience. The evening proved to me, yet again, the incredible amount of creative talent the area has.’

The audience was caught up in an exhilarating whirlwind of quick-fire sets, which were beautifully paced throughout. Mixtape works really well.  I had a brilliantly entertaining night and my companion left with the coveted Golden Mixtape, so all in all, a huge thumbs-up’
Alliterati Magazine

‘Theatre director Melanie Rashbrooke is onto a winner with this concept and the inclusion of both young writers and performers is one which pleases me; giving young people a platform to show off their talents results in a funny, clever, well thought out evening of new theatre.
