Preview: Frank Sumatra at Newcastle Alphabetti

The Hairy One is Back...
and Still Causing Trouble!

Frank Sumatra
Newcastle Alphabetti Theatre
Monday 2nd to Saturday 7th May 2016

Balham Theatre N16, The Bedford
Monday 9th to Wednesday 18th May 2016

Bev and Keith are a nice young couple who like to do their bit for the environment and spend ten quid a month sponsoring an orphaned orangutan in a Sumatran sanctuary. They're also trying hard for a baby. When their adopted orangutan turns up on the doorstep, he’s soon got his grippy feet firmly under the table and they find themselves parents to a hairy, delinquent teenager.

The dark and absurd comedy is performed in the style of a live radio recording and is described as Paddington Bear gone wrong. And not a bear.

Frank Sumatra was originally commissioned by Queen’s Hall Hexham in 2015 for a short tour of the North East and received brilliant audience responses. North East Theatre Guide REVIEW LINK This completely new production will bring the comedy to a wider audience, both here in the North East and in London.

After a week’s run at Alphabetti Theatre in Newcastle, the production will transfer to London as part of the Wandsworth Fringe Festival in May.

It is the first of several projects building on a developing relationship between Alphabetti Theatre in Newcastle and Theatre N16 in Balham. Theatre N16 is run by young Blyth-born theatre entrepreneur Jamie Eastlake, who is keen to give North East theatre talent the chance to showcase in London.

Jamie said, ‘I loved Frank Sumatra when I read the script and knew it would be a brilliant way to show off some cracking Geordie talent and humour here in London.’

Frank Sumatra is written by Mike Yeaman. His comedies Lucky Numbers North East Theatre Guide REVIEW LINK and Canoeing For Beginners both started out in the North East but have since been performed as far afield as Finland and New Zealand and translated into several languages.

Well-known director Neil Armstrong has had nominations for Writers’ Guild of Great Britain and National Comedy awards. Most recent North East productions include Death at Dawn (North East Theatre Guide REVIEW LINK) and Durham Gala panto.

The cast includes Pip Chamberlin, Dean Logan and Hannah Walker.
