Golden Love Songs

Dreamboats And Miniskirts

Darlington Civic Theatre
Mon 15 to Sat 20 September

The sequel to the musical smash hit Dreamboats and Petticoats sees Bobby and Laura struggling to match the success of their first hit.  The problems result in them parting their ways and so the musical journey begins through the hits of the early 60s as the couple try to find success on different paths.

The tone was set early on as Elizabeth Carter, as Laura, used her fabulous voice to stunning effect with her rendition of Stay. The band, led by musical director Michael Kantola, are always on the stage and put in a great shift as they support the vocal talents. The musicians, as The Conquests, get involved in the story too. Has a role ever asked someone to play Saxophone whilst their head was in a hair dryer before one wonders?

Ross William Wild, as Norman, and Alex Beaumont, as Bobby, have numerous opportunities to sing with memorable hits such as Oh Pretty Woman and Louie Louie. Alex’s version of You Really Got A Hold On Me was a particular highlight.

Perhaps the weakest link is the book, by Laurence Marks & Maurice Gran of Goodnight Sweetheart fame, which only serves to provide a link to the constant stream of the beloved hits of the era.

This is more of a musical jukebox than a jukebox musical but strong performances of popular classic songs left a packed house very happy.
