Coming to Arts Centre Washington on Thursday 11 & Friday 12 September, Encounter Productions presents dark new comedy Choir written by Lee Mattinson.

CHOIR is an exploration of community and companionship, hilarious and heartbreaking in turn, as one man strives to find his voice through song, storytelling and spoons.

CHOIR is a co-production between Encounter, Alnwick Playhouse, ARC Stockton, Arts Centre Washington and Northern Stage. It has been developed through the Bridging the Gap scheme, which was established to create and tour new theatre across the North East.

This one-man play stars North East actor Donald McBride as Francis, the reincarnation of Judy Garland who remembers every movie take and mistake from his not so distant past life. And so Francis vows to pave his very own yellow brick road in order to avoid the crippling demons he experienced as Judy. An anarchic twist on the vintage glamour of MGM musicals, CHOIR uses dark humour to ask deeper questions about what it means to be loved and our shared need to avoid the cruel chill of loneliness.

Encounter Productions are an Associate Company of ARC Stockton Arts Centre and make highly visual and physical theatre to entertain and engage audiences. Earlier this year they completed a sell-out run of Streets in the Sky, a play performed in a disused house commissioned by Halifax Festival.

Lee Mattinson has written for Live Theatre, Bush Theatre, National Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Paines Plough. His latest show Crocodiles is being produced by Royal Exchange Manchester and will premiere at the venue in October.
