Show
Inspired by the Life of Nina Simone will have you Feeling Good
Black is the Color of My
Voice
South Shields Customs House
Saturday 9th
July 2016
A
five-star production, which has sold out in New York, Shanghai and at The Edinburgh
Festival Fringe, arrives in the north east this summer.

Apphia
Campbell‘s one-woman show, Black is the Color of My Voice is inspired by the
life of Nina Simone and comes to The Customs House in South Shields on Saturday
9th July.
Singer,
writer and actress Apphia said: “I chose to write a story inspired by such a
great woman for two reasons, the first being her voice. The second was that she
was such an inspirational and dynamic woman. As a piano prodigy, singer, civil
rights activist, mother, and black woman, Simone voiced injustices, despite the
potential repercussions.”
The
show, which picked up an Argus Angel award for Apphia’s ‘intense command of the
stage’ and countless rave reviews, follows a successful jazz singer and civil
rights activist seeking redemption after the untimely death of her father.

She
reflects on the journey that took her from a young piano prodigy destined for a
life in the service of the church, to a renowned jazz vocalist at the forefront
of the Civil Rights Movement.
The
show features renditions of Simone’s famous hits including I Put a Spell On
You, I Loves You, Porgy and, of course, Feeling Good.
Customs
House Executive Director Ray Spencer said: “Apphia’s soulful jazz voice is the
kind of voice that will make the hairs of the back of your neck stand on end. This
show has just stunning reviews and we’ve heard such wonderful things about it,
we can’t wait for it to take place. Come along and join us for what promises to
be a spellbinding performance.”
