After two years, The Wheatsheaf Pub returns as Geordie the Musical
returns in a new venue, with a new cast member, and a new ending. But the
Jukebox Musical of traditional Geordie numbers still retains the nostalgia and
the warmth that made it so successful during it's first run at the Customs
House.
Dale Meeks takes to the Tyne Theatre & Opera House
Stage, inheriting the role originated by Shaun Prendergast in 2015, but this is
the only change to the cast who perform together as truly one unit- real
chemistry and camaraderie radiate from the stage. Meeks should be familiar to
North East audiences along with Viktoria Kay, Micky Cochrane, Donald McBride,
James Hedley and Phil Corbitt. To the Newcastle audiences, Eleanor
Chaganis, Luke Maddison and Adam Donaldson may not be as well-known but they
claim as much of this show as their peers do. Together, this nine-strong
ensemble are excellent.
Jamie Brown directs this show sublimely, never wavering on the world
he's creating for a second. Much praise must go to the live musicians Adam
Nyberg and Peter Morris, and
Musical Director Mike Turnbull, who's arrangements for songs we know so well
make them fresh and fun- and sometimes haunting.
Geordie the Musical runs until the 14th, with matinee performances
Thursday and Saturday.
