Five hundred, twenty five thousand, six hundred minutes
How do you measure a year in the life?
RENT
Newcastle
Jubilee Theatre
Wednesday
14th – Saturday 17th September 2016
This is very much a year of anniversaries. It is 20
years since the first performance of RENT and First Act Theatre have been
the resident theatre company in the Jubilee Theatre for 25 years. Second Act
Theatre was created to cater primarily for past members of First Act Theatre
who still wanted to continue performing.
They had open auditions to find our cast for RENT and were so fortunate to find the
cast we have for this production. They are from all over the North East and not
only are they so talented and hard working, but they are the nicest group of
people that the team have ever had the pleasure of working with.
About
RENT
Jonathan Larson fabulous musical RENT is loosely based on Puccini’s
opera La Boheme.
After the musical’s final dress rehearsal for its
off-Broadway opening, Jonathan Larson died from an undiagnosed aortic aneurysm.
He did not live to see RENT’s
success.
Larson’s inspiration
for RENT’s
content came from several different sources. Many of the characters and plot
elements are drawn directly from La Boheme. The opera was also about the lives
of poor young artists. Tuberculosis, the
plague of Puccini’s opera is replaced by HIV/AIDS in RENT.
1800’s Paris is replaced by New York’s East Village in the late 1980’s or
early 1990’s.
