Theatre Announce First Performance in the new Live Garden

MOBILE, a
Live Theatre and The Marlowe Theatre co-commission, presented by The Paper
Birds will be the first performance to take place in the new Live Garden on Newcastle Quayside.
Opening at Live Theatre on Wednesday 8th June, it will run
until Sunday 26th June before touring the UK in July.
The specially commission piece has been created by The Paper Birds, is directed
by Jemma McDonnell, and will be performed by Kylie Walsh and Georgie Coles.
Staged in a caravan at locations around the UK, Mobile is an inventive and intimate piece of theatre about
class, family, aspiration and belonging. Made for audiences of
up to 9 people at a time, this 40 minute show is set in a caravan, based on
interviews conducted in communities across the UK.
The caravan will be located in Live Garden, the new
public park and performance area linking the theatre with the Quayside
developed as part of Live Works.
Mobile
explores our sense of home, belonging, aspiration, and the realities of social
mobility. Powerful true stories and dreams for the future are revealed through a
magical world of video projection, recorded interviews and original music.
Based on
personal testimonies collected in community workshops, research by collaborator
Prof. Sam Friedman, and the company’s own lives, it explores experiences,
benefits and potential costs of social mobility.
When Cindy’s comfortable
graduate life begins to unravel, she can’t bring herself to move ‘back home’
and instead finds herself living in her mother’s caravan. As she shares her
story, her conflicted thoughts and feelings are joined by the voices of others
from all walks of lives.

is about who we are, where we have come from and the impact on us of our
parents’ class and upbringing. Social mobility is, very rightly, viewed as a
positive force and something for individuals and political forces to aspire to
but is it always a positive experience? We look forward to opening up this conversation
in our caravan – taking the show to audiences rather than them coming to us in
a traditional theatre setting.’

Theatre has enjoyed a long relationship with The Paper Birds. Their work has
always been a natural addition to our programme and always speaks directly to
our audiences. However it’s fantastic to be able to take that relationship to a
whole new level and join them as co-commissioners of Mobile.
This is a really exciting production exploring some very important issues in an
innovative and magical way. What’s even more exciting is that this is the first
production specifically commissioned for our new outdoor space Live Garden.’
Mobile premieres at Live Theatre, Newcastle. It then tours until November 2016, with
locations including The Marlowe Theatre, outside a bank on Canterbury High
Street, at schools in Kent, Latitude Festival, Turner Contemporary Margate and
Theatre Royal Plymouth.
