The Gilbert
& Sullivan Opera Company bring three top-drawer productions to
Darlington Civic Theatre

After twenty years
headlining the world famous International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival, the
acclaimed Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company visits the Civic Theatre with
three brand-new and exciting productions of G&S favourites. They are the
finest professional performers of G&S to be found anywhere in the world,
featuring the most ‘in demand’ G&S specialists including Simon Butteriss,
Richard Gauntlett, Bruce Graham, Sylvia Clarke, Vicky Byron, Oliver White and John Savournin.
IOLANTHE
Tue 1 July 7.30pm
A delightful story
built around a fairy who was banished from Fairy Land for life for
marrying a mortal: Gilbert’s incisive witty political satire is as relevant
today as it was when it was first performed in 1882, and many consider the
music among the best of Sullivan’s work.
In this ‘fairy
opera’ the House of Lords is lampooned as a bastion of ineffective, privileged
dimwits! The political party system and other institutions also come in for a
dose of satire.
THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE
Wed 2 July 7.30pm,
Thu 3 July 2pm & 7.30pm
Thu 3 July 2pm & 7.30pm
This wonderful
jolly romp complete with a brave(ish!) band of swash buckling pirates, a
completely dotty Major General, his beautiful unwed daughters and a bumbling
bunch of hopeless but hilarious British policemen has all the elements for
outstanding entertainment. Probably the
best loved of all the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire.

One of the most
popular of the Savoy operas. Set in the fictitious Japanese town of Titipu, this hilarious
story exudes big, colourful characters and well known songs that you will be
humming long after you have returned home.
